Transmission problems explained: shudder, harsh shifts, CVTs and what to test on a drive

Transmission and powertrain complaints are the second-largest category in this index after engines, and they are the category buyers fear most, because a transmission repair often costs more than an older car is worth. The good news is that most transmission problems announce themselves during a ten-minute test drive if you know what to look for. This article covers the four common automatic designs, how each one fails, and what the owner reports say.
Four designs, four failure patterns
Conventional automatics with a torque converter
Still the most common design in trucks, SUVs and larger cars, now with eight, nine or ten speeds. The torque converter contains a lock-up clutch that engages at cruising speed to save fuel. When that clutch slips or engages roughly, owners feel a vibration at a steady speed, often between 25 and 45 mph, that feels like driving over rumble strips. Owners call it "shudder". Degraded fluid is the usual cause and a fluid exchange sometimes fixes it; when it does not, the converter or the valve body is replaced. The other frequent complaint with many-speed automatics is calibration: hunting between gears, harsh downshifts, a delay or a clunk when moving from park into drive. Software updates address some of these; others are mechanical.
Continuously variable transmissions
A CVT uses a steel belt or chain between two variable pulleys instead of fixed gears, and it dominates compact cars and small SUVs from several Japanese brands. Complaints cluster around three symptoms: a whine or drone that rises with speed, a hesitation or "rubber band" surge when accelerating from a stop, and overheating on long climbs or in hot weather, sometimes with a warning message that limits power. Worn belts and failed bearings are terminal; the unit is usually replaced rather than rebuilt. Fluid is critical, and the "lifetime fluid" claim in some owner manuals is the source of many disputes.
Dual-clutch transmissions
Essentially two automated manual gearboxes sharing a housing, one for odd gears and one for even. Dry-clutch versions in small cars became notorious for judder and hesitation at parking speeds, unpredictable creep in traffic, and clutch wear within the warranty period. Wet-clutch versions in performance and luxury cars are more robust but expensive to service. Owner reports typically mention low-speed lurching, a delay when pulling out into traffic, and a warning to stop the vehicle when the clutch overheats.
Hybrid and electric drive units
Power-split hybrids have no conventional gearbox and rarely appear in transmission complaints. Electric vehicles have a single-speed reduction gear, but their reports do include driveline noise, differential and axle faults and, more often, software behaviour that owners file under powertrain: unexpected loss of power, limp mode, or a car that will not shift into drive.
What owners report most
Across the tracked models, the words that appear far more often in transmission complaints than elsewhere are "shudder", "jerk", "hesitation", "slipping", "gear", "shifting" and "limp". Reports of a car that "would not move" or "lost power on the highway" are the ones that trigger safety investigations. Several models in this index have had transmission recalls for software that could cause an unintended downshift or a loss of drive, and a few have had investigations into rollaway risk from shifter designs. A test-drive checklist
- Cold start. Transmissions misbehave most when cold. Ask the seller not to warm the car up before you arrive.
- Park to reverse to drive. Do this with your foot on the brake and count. More than a one-second delay, or a clunk, is worth a question.
- Creep in traffic. Roll forward at walking pace and stop several times. Lurching, judder or a vibration at 5 mph points at a dual-clutch or converter problem.
- Light throttle at 30 to 45 mph. Hold a steady speed on a flat road. A rumble-strip vibration is converter shudder.
- Hard acceleration and a merge. Listen for flare (revs rising without speed) and feel for a delayed downshift.
- A long hill if you can find one. CVT overheating shows up here, sometimes with a warning message.
- Check the fluid record. Ask when the transmission fluid was last changed. "Never" on a CVT with 60,000 miles is a negotiating point or a reason to walk.
Repair, warranty and what to expect
Manufacturers have extended transmission warranties on several models after complaint clusters, sometimes to 100,000 miles or more, and have reprogrammed control modules at no charge under service campaigns. Before paying for a repair, ask the dealer to check for open campaigns and technical bulletins by VIN, and check the NHTSA recall lookup yourself.
