Two cars with the same name on the tailgate can be almost unrelated machines. A model is redesigned every five to eight years, refreshed in the middle, given a new transmission or engine when regulations change, and quietly re-sourced when a supplier fails. Owner complaints track those changes closely. On the model pages of this site, the difference between the best and worst model year of the same nameplate is frequently a factor of three, and sometimes ten. This article explains where that gap comes from and how to use the year-by-year data.
The first year of a redesign
A new generation arrives with new tooling, new suppliers, new software and a workforce that has not built it before. The industry has known about the first-year effect for decades and it still shows in the data: complaints per vehicle in the first model year of a redesign are typically higher than in the third, and the problems are of a particular kind. Owners report infotainment crashes, warning lights with no fault found, wind noise and trim pieces, and, more seriously, driver-assist systems that behave unpredictably and transmissions whose calibration is revised in the second year. Mechanical failures that take years to develop, such as oil consumption, appear later and are more often associated with a new engine family than with a new body.
Mid-cycle refreshes and carryover years
Around the third or fourth year, a refresh changes the front and rear styling, updates the screen and sometimes replaces the transmission. Those years can go either way. A refresh that fixed known problems produces the best model years in the run; one that introduced a new gearbox or a new driver-assist suite produces a second, smaller spike. The final carryover years before the next redesign are usually the quietest, which is why the last model year of an old generation is often the best used buy.
Supplier changes and the pandemic years
The 2021 and 2022 model years were built during a semiconductor shortage. Some vehicles left the factory without features that were fitted later at the dealer, some were built with substitute parts, and many were built quickly once parts arrived. Those years show distinctive complaint patterns in electrical and driver-assist categories on several models. Supplier problems are visible in other years too: the same fuel pump, airbag inflator or windshield supplier turns up across brands in the same model years, which is why a recall in one brand is worth checking against another.
How to read the year-by-year numbers here
Every model page shows, for each model year, the number of complaints, the rate per year on the road, the index against all tracked vehicles, the count of complaints filed within the first two years, and that early-life count compared with other vehicles of the same age. The last two columns are the fair comparison across model years, because they remove the effect of age: a 2019 has had seven years to accumulate reports and a 2024 has had two. The trend line on the model page is built from those early-life figures. A model year flagged as running well above the model's own average is the one to research, and the problem pages tell you what to research.
Which models show the largest gap
The live table below lists the tracked models with the biggest difference between their best and worst model year, with the rates for each. A large gap is not necessarily bad news for a buyer: it means the same nameplate has years that are much better than its reputation, and the data tells you which.

A buying rule of thumb
- Identify the generation: which model year was the redesign, and which was the refresh. The year-by-year chart on the model page usually makes the boundaries obvious.
- Prefer the second or later year of a generation unless the first year's complaints are demonstrably fixed under recall or warranty.
- Read the problem pages for the specific year, then check that car's recall status by VIN. A first-year car with every recall completed and a documented software update can be a better buy than a later one without records.
- Weigh rate, not count. A year with more complaints because it sold more cars is not worse than a year with fewer complaints and fewer cars.
