Stalling and loss of motive power: the complaint NHTSA takes most seriously

"The car shut off while I was driving." It is the most alarming sentence in the complaint database and one of the most common. A vehicle that loses power at speed loses power steering assist and, after a few pumps, power brake assist too, while the traffic behind it does not slow down. That is why NHTSA classifies loss of motive power as a safety defect regardless of the cause, why it opens investigations on relatively small clusters of such reports, and why "stall" is one of the terms this site tracks across every model.

The main causes, in the order owners report them

Fuel delivery

Low-pressure fuel pumps sit inside the tank and are expected to last the life of the car. In recent years a single supplier's pump design, with an impeller that could swell and seize, was fitted to millions of vehicles across several brands and produced one of the largest recall waves in the database. The symptom is a stall at low speed or a failure to restart, often on a hot day. High-pressure pumps on direct-injection engines fail differently, with a stumble under load and a check-engine light. Owners also report stalls from clogged filters, failed fuel-level sensors that let the tank run dry while showing a quarter full, and from a fuel cutoff triggered by a minor impact.

The engine itself

A bearing that has been starved of oil will seize without much warning; a timing chain that has jumped will stop the engine instantly. The oil-consumption problem discussed elsewhere on this site ends here for the unlucky. Ignition coils, crankshaft position sensors and throttle bodies fail more gently, with a stumble and a light first. Reports of engines that stall on deceleration or at idle, then restart, usually point to sensors or throttle control rather than mechanical failure.

Transmission and driveline

"Lost drive" rather than "stalled": the engine runs but the car does not move. Owners describe a slipping clutch pack, a CVT that overheated and went into a protective mode, a broken axle, or a control module that shifted to neutral. Several recalls in the database concern software that could command a shift to neutral or park at speed.

High-voltage systems in hybrids and EVs

Electric vehicles do not stall, but they do lose motive power, and owners use both phrases. The causes reported are a high-voltage battery fault that opens the contactors, an inverter or motor controller failure, a coolant leak that triggers a shutdown, and, increasingly, the humble 12-volt battery that runs the computers: when it dies, the car cannot close the high-voltage contactors and will not move. Software recalls for sudden power loss in EVs are among the most common recall types of the last few years.

Electrical and software

Body control modules, wiring chafed on a bracket, a corroded ground strap or an ignition switch can all cut power to the engine. Modern cars add a new category: a software fault in the powertrain controller, fixed by an over-the-air update, that caused a shutdown on a specific combination of inputs.

What owners describe around the event

The most common phrases in these reports are "shut off", "died", "lost all power", "no warning", "would not restart" and "highway". Many reports mention that the dealer found no stored fault code, which is typical of intermittent electrical and fuel faults and a source of real frustration. What to do in the moment

  1. Do not turn the key off. Keep the ignition on so the steering lock does not engage and the hazard lights work. Shift to neutral.
  2. Steer firmly. The wheel becomes heavy without assist but still works. Aim for the shoulder or the nearest safe stop.
  3. Brake early and once. Vacuum brake boosters hold enough reserve for one or two firm applications. Electric boosters may keep working; do not count on it.
  4. Hazards on, then try a restart only once you are stopped. A car that restarts and stalls again should be towed, not driven home.
  5. Write down the conditions immediately: speed, temperature, fuel level, any warning lights, what the car had just been doing. This is what the dealer and NHTSA will ask.

What to do afterwards

Check the recall status by VIN before the dealer visit; a stall is often the symptom of an open recall the owner never received notice of. Ask the dealer to pull the freeze-frame data, not just the current codes. Keep the repair order even if the finding was "could not duplicate". And file a report with NHTSA: investigations into stalling are opened on clusters of reports that individually looked like nothing.
